6-30-09 Tuesday Althorp Point Cove July 5, 2009

Althorp Point Cove – We left Bickley Bay at 9:10am to go to Lagoon Cove in the Broughtons a 45+ mile trip. We went about 16 miles and came out into Sunderland Channel not far from Johnstone Strait. Winds were on our nose 25 then rising to 35 kts apparent. After about 1.3 miles of pounding with 12 more to go before we could get out of it we turned around and headed back to a cove I saw on the way out. We didn’t think it had a name but I thought it looked good enough for anchoring. Another 2 miles from us is a better protected place called Forward Harbour, hopefully we won’t have to pick up and go there. (It’s been a couple of hours now and things seem fine here.) We put the anchor down in 30 feet and let out 200 feet of chain eventually then did a stern tie to shore. Another sail boat “Lively” went by us as we were doing out anchor stuff. He came back after a couple of miles of pounding we found out later. Chris Reed in a 2007 Beneteau 389, single sailor. He tried doing a stern tie too but didn’t have enough stern line of only 400 feet to get back to the boat. He looks fine with just an anchor we decided and far enough away from us to not cause a problem. Sunny weather but very windy. 30 to 40 kts expected until midnight. Hopefully 10 to 15 in the morning but then rising wind again. Chris is headed to the Queen Charlottes too after picking up a friend at Sandspit.
