Code Blue folks, 7-29-16

We got up at 5:45am to set our main quadrant Nexus Auto Pilot from 2003 that hasn’t been working lately and also our Raymarine ST2000 auxiliary auto pilot, 2012, to our Hydrovane windvane. Up this this point we’ve tried a few times to commission the Raymarine but were never successful. The Nexus kept giving an Error 34 message (Calibration Error) check wiring connections. So from 7:20 to about 10am we tried calibrating and setting these units. We took a break for breakfast and lunch, read some more, checking wiring and tried to figure out what we needed to do. At 4 pm we set out to do circles in this small bay again. The Raymarine has a setting to reverse the side, the unit is connected to so we figured a simple change and then calibrate the compass and then check. The Nexus we tried several things but still Error 34. Then worked on the Raymarine unit. By 5:20pm we were done and the Raymarine unit seemed to be working fine, Yea! We did 10 miles of circles in this little Bavatu Bay and have success on one unit. Siti the manager here for the plantation came out with his boat to see what was wrong he thought with all the circles we were doing.

The plan is to head out early tomorrow the same way we came in and sail to Falaga Island (Southern Lau Group), about 135 miles by course line. This will be an overnighter. We’ll do some weather info before we leave but the last we checked last night things look good. We made a bunch of water during our midday break so things are good there. A bit frustrating with our main auto pilot problem but at least we don’t have to hand steer while motoring if that happens. Winds look good enough in the right direction that we hope to sail most of the way and can use our windvane Heidi.

Back to the ground stations reporting they didn’t have internet connections for over 33 hours. In reality they were connected earlier, I just didn’t know it until later. Sorry for the duplicate portion in my last email if you got it.

Well done on auto pilot – hope you had a good trip across. Give us a call when you are in Seattle.
