We’ve been in La Paz a week and getting ready to head to Mazatlan for a few days, then harbor hop down to PV. Engine Hrs 2835.1, Odometer 5036, Trip NM 4696.

I took out the replacement transmission that was 2.33 to 1, and Rob Cross of Cross Marine Works put in the newly rebuilt original transmission 2.64 to 1. We had it rebuilt in Everett, WA at Harbor Marine. A catamaran could of used this our 2.33 one a couple of weeks ago and he might be interested in the ours for the other side, but he’s selling the boat so maybe not.

Merry Christmas & A Happy New Year From Steve & Judy

Merry Christmas & A Happy New Year From Steve & Judy

Code Blue Followers, 12-19-13

We finally released ourselves from the Guaymas area and motored 125 nm, and sailed 7 nm to Puerto Escondido, on the Baja side near Loreto, we’re on our way to La Paz, hopefully before Christmas. We had some more wind we could of sailed but it was on our nose and up to 24 knots for several hours. I chose to keep motoring so Judy could sleep better. Here’s a Christmas picture from Code Blue with Santa hats while at the docks of Fonatur in Guaymas. (more…)

We’re in Marina Seca Guaymas and the bathrooms (Banos) are not the best. A step down from Marina Seca San Carlos. They were promised last February some say and other dates. Finally it looks like they will open soon. Here’s some pictures of the new ones that will open within a week they say. They are outside the fence so they will only be open say 7 or 8am to 7 or 8pm. The old ones will be open 24 hours a day. The rooms are 32 ½ feet by 14’ 4” with 4 showers and 4 stalls, men’s has two sinks and a urinal. Women’s is similar with two sets of double sinks.. Showers are 64” x 44”, stalls are 54” x 45”. So far only two lights, no fans or exhaust, 3 small windows and some shelves in a corner. (more…)

Sunset over the boat yard

Sunset over the boat yard

Code Blue Followers, 12-11-13

We came back to the boat in the boatyard Oct 29th and finally we’re getting close to putting s/v Code Blue back in the water.

We just did most of the new bottom painting. It’s been red from the factory since about Aug 2001. Pettit Trinidad has worked great in cold waters of the Pacific North West. Usually painting every five years or so. After reading some articles about Blue Water Marine Paint http://www.bluewatermarinepaint.com I’ve switched to ablative paint by them called Copper Shield SCX 45, Admiral Green #8303. This paint was rated excellent by Practical Sailor and a couple of sailors in the yard here have used it and think it is great for Mexico and hopefully the South Pacific. (more…)

Batteries the bad caps

Batteries the bad caps

Well I think I figured out what the deal is with the batteries. A Mike of s/v Sunshine Lady came over to buy one of the batteries from my 4 that are good. Upon taking it out I noticed water in the bottom of the battery safety box. I thought maybe it was water spilled from filling the batteries. But when I took it over to the dry dirt to pour out about a cup of fluid, the dirty sizzled from the acid that was there. The batteries didn’t have a leak. (more…)

10-29-13 Tues.

We’re back at the boat in Guaymas, 260 miles south of the border. We flew from Seattle to Phoenix on Oct 21 then rented a Chevy Cruze car from Fox Rental. We asked for an economy and they offered to upgrade us to Compact for so many dollars more, but we weren’t interested. They ended up giving us the compact Chevy Cruse anyway for no charge as they didn’t have any economy models. I was a bit worried of the fuel MPG usage so took it easy on the pedal. We thought we would be going into Nogales, MX to drop Judy off and clear customs but it was a big hassle and no Mexican insurance available after the car rental started. The Cruze has an MPG gauge built in, but we didn’t know how to reset it for quite a ways into the rental. Anyway with the Cruze we got 45 miles to the gallon and I topped it really good at Costco for $3.05 a gallon. Going across the border I’ll tell you toward the end as that was a major concern with 325 pounds worth of many dollars of sail gear for the boat.

OK - this is not really Guaymas, but a Stage Coach at Old Sturbridge Village in Massachusetts

8-31-13 We sailed some to Guaymas and got to the Fonatur Marina. No one was around and we could not get out as the gate was locked. I tried my boat horn and finally a guy that was walking tried to get a guard but could not find one. Finally I yelled at a guy in the parking lot leaving and he got a guard. The guard gave us his key and we were able to take showers and such. The office was closed as they usually leave early on Saturdays we found out but the sign says until 5pm. The recommended restaurant Barco’s, was closed for good, so we ended up going to a place called Chulas near the church. A bit like Denny’s but Mexican. This was for Judy’s birthday celebration.  (Editors note: Denny’s for birthday, sounds so so romantic 🙂 )

8-30-13 San Carlson Marina. We had a fairly nice motor from BLA to Isla Partida for 24 miles and overnight stay, then to San Carlos was 134 miles with 37 of them sailing, so 158 total. Another two boats, Slipper and True Companion left Puerto Don Juan a day later by a southern route and got slammed just before coming into San Carlos with 45 knot Chubasco storm that we also felt inside the marina. Heavy rain with it too. Slipper with Dave and Laurie are now safe right next to us in the marina here. They were too tired to go to the party/potluck on Pied a Mer III that night over at Marina Real. As they had just come in from the crossing and were pooped due to the storm. (more…)
