Temps are 81 to 82 night and day. Humidity about 74 to 78% most of the time on the ocean here. Seas good sized 2 – 3 meters but rolly and long now. Wind 15-23 but sometimes at night dies down a bit to 7 to 12 or less. We put up a pole and full jib that works great, we can adjust the jib size. Hard to gibe over but now we can go down way deeper and stay on our course we want with just this tack. Before we had to gibe back and forth, up to 50 miles off course to one side over night. Heidi our Hydrovane is going great. Fakarava in Tuamotus 292 miles to go. Doing about 5 to 5.5 miles per hour.

We had a problem with our solar panels being switched off on two of them and didn’t know it. Not enough power was coming in and could not figure out why we didn’t have plenty. A bucket in the laz I think caused the problem for two days after making water brought our batteries way down. Now doing better at minus 62 amps but I think another day and we’ll be better. Two days in row we were minus 150 amps in the morning. Cloudy to partly cloudy days here at times, not quite like Mexico. 5:30pm local time, 0300 UTC due to quirk in time zone here.

Took these today 5-24-14 on the boat. Beard for Steve is now about 2 months old. Trying for the nautical look, but Judy is concerned I look older now and a different guy.

Bay Of Virgins

Bay Of Virgins

Code Blue Followers, 5-24-14

Thought I’d send a bunch of pictures that I wasn’t able to send before.

Locals from the Bay of Virgins,

SwimHike is the hike about 1 hour up some, at Bay of Virgins.

When it “Rains” it can pour some.

Baggett is the oven that racks go into with dough and out comes baked Baggett’s. The main staple of bread here for about 60 cents to a dollar depending on the island you are on. This one was in Resolution Bay at a little store.

s/v Code Blue – Slight Update – We are in Hana Moe Noa, Tahuata Island May 17, 2014

We are are in Hana Moe Noa, near Vaitahu on island of Tahuata, not far from Atuona. We are at S 09* 54.4′, W 139* 00.3′, Not too far from Hiva Oa as we can see the island nearby. Steep white sand beach, aqua marine water due to the 30′ deep bay, tropical fish around, 13 cruisers in here.

I spent yesterday cleaning our bottom with a friends gasoline Hooka system. There is a very nice coral reef right under our boat that I checked out. Judy tended the motor in the dinghy with ear muffs and a book. I’m not impressed with our Blue Water Marine paint, ablative, from New Jersey. We just painted in December and already major growth. This is the second time, I cleaned the bottom good, just before we left PV was the first. Small barnacles every inch or so on a great major of the hull and rudder. Speed Prop on the prop is mostly gone now, due to the pitch change I made. Other boaters using Mexican ablative, have almost nothing.

Maybe a potluck on the beach tonight. But it rained last night some.

I guess I’m not communicating with the group that well. I thought we were headed to Resolution Bay. This is a couple of miles further north on the same island.

Code Blue Followers, 5-16-14 7:39am local time.

Just thought I’d send an update on s/v Code Blue’s location. We’re anchored just off Tahuata Island. Another bay called Hapatoni Bay is close by and yesterday 5-17-14 we took the dinghy over to a small community that has a ramp, church, school and an artisana wood carvers shed. They had a potluck going on and many of the carvings from workers on display for sale. Judy bought a decorative Marquesan paddle about 24 inches long carved by a local called Amedee with accents on the first two e’s, so in Sailmail Ame’de’e, as I don’t know how to do accent letters. Judy has another Maori paddle at home from New Zealand. We’re trying to decide where to mount it, for now it’s resting location is in the bunk next to Judy. Earlier in the morning it was pretty windy. We set our dinghy in the water behind the boat to get ready to leave. While talking on the radio about whether to go to shore or not in the high winds of 10 to 25 knots with s/v Roundabout and Sequoia, Ted mentioned our dinghy had flipped over, which had our new electric motor portion on it. It’s waterproof to IP67 standards, but we don’t like to test it all that much. We tried flipping it back over near the stern but ended up walking to our beam and using a halyard to lift it up and righting it. Two oars spilled out and got rescued too. We decided to wait another hour and see if the wind would continue to drop, which it did.

s/v Code Blue – Home Made Yogurt On the Boat May 5, 2014

We make yogurt from powered milk as we ran out about 12 days out from PV on the way to the Marquesas. We use it a lot for breakfast with granola, fruit or cereal. Out here in the hinterland there is no fresh milk or very rarely yogurt. We use UHT milk in boxes for cereal, tea and as regular milk. We don’t have a lot of room in the fridge so we make yogurt along the way as we need it.

1 1/2 Cups of regular clean water (no chlorine) to 2 cups of powdered whole milk in mixing bowl mixed up.

1 1/2 teaspoons of plain starter yogurt. Judy uses plain Greek Yogurt, needs to have active yeast with no fruit, sugar etc in it. Judy says she puts in about 2 teaspoons usually. Mix this up with the room temp water and powdered milk. You can save some of your last batch and use this as your starter instead.

Hiva Oa, Marquesas

Code Blue in the Harbor at Hiva Oa, Marquesas

Well we landed in Hiva Oa yesterday the 30th about 6:11pm PV std time. From PV, MX crossed the equator, then to Hiva Oa.

Position now is 09* 48.2′ S, 139* 01.9′ W with about 27 boats in this anchorage. 13 knots of wind from the north made a tricky anchorage and three boats lost their stern anchorage from the north while we were setting ours out. The check in lady agent, Sandra, is on holiday today, May Day? But OK to go into shore they say. The little store is closed here also.
