Hiva Oa – 660 nm to go April 24, 2014

Not there yet, we’re getting trashed by 20-32 kts the last couple of days. Finally down to 25 this morning. We just put in a blog update about the equator party you should see.

Now 660 miles to go. So maybe 6 or so days if the winds keep up and the boat doesn’t fall apart.

Judy got trapped in the head due to the latch on the door knob handle broke in the down position. I finally rescued her but she was kind of loud about it.

Still no fish. We do about 100 to 130 but we don’t like getting trashed, so slow down in high winds to 100 or so. Looks like it will be sunny to day already. Jib only up at 80%.

Grib charts say 5 to 15 kts for days now. Wish we could give some wind to others north of us, as they don’t have much.

Code Blue – Equator Crossing April 23, 2014

Code Blue Followers,

Crossed Equator 2029 UTC, drinks for us a bit, some Tequila to Neptune not to much, wore masks, took some pictures, nice weather then about 2:30pm PV std time. Too much wind to stop and swim.

Now at 00* 32′ S, 129* 41′ W; getting hit by rain squalls in the middle of the night every so often. 4 – 6 kts of wind with all sails up, then 25 to 30 kts and driving rain. Kind of wakes you up every four hours or so.

22 miles motoring out of Banderas Bay, then 21 miles motoring in the doldrums so far the rest is sailing.

Thought I’d give you an update.
05* 58.9 N, 126* 53.9 W 190 COG, speed 5-6 10-20+ kts wind. 0359 UTC, course is 190M

Trip Mileage since Seattle, 7337
Miles since PV, Mexico 1700, left 4-2-14 7:55pm, about 1176 to Hiva Oa, Marquesas

We do about 120 to 130 miles on a good day.

Day 83 F, night 81 F, water temp is 80.5 F. Humidity 75% today, up to 85% others. Water gin clear. Lots of clouds and rain squalls yesterday, today 4-17 Thursday, sunny.

We are close or in the ITCZ, Inter Tropical Convergence Zone.

April 16, Update from the “Great” Fisherman April 16, 2014

Day 81 F, night 80 F, water temp is 79 to 80 F.

Humidity 75 to 85% lots of clouds and rain squalls today.

Close or in the ITCZ 07* 41′ N, 126* 08′ W. Inter Tropical Convergence Zone.

Caught a Dorado fish today, first on this leg after 7 days of trying.

Position – Updates 4-16-14 April 16, 2014

Code Blue Followers,

A few questions we have been ask about the trip.

What’s your watch schedule?

About 10pm we start a 4 hour watch, then 2am another 4 hour but usually longer to 7 or 8 so that person gets a long sleep. Then tea and breakfast or go to sleep longer, then breakfast.
Usually switch this each night but if one is longer on the wheel/cockpit while I’m making water and sleeping then Judy will take the first 10pm sleep.

Do you get much uninterrupted sleep?

Usually no problems so far.
With 2 of you, that’s got to be tough. Hasn’t been bad at all. Lots of book reading on watch.

Position April 15, 2014 April 15, 2014

Code Blue Followers 4-15-14

At 7:30pm PV (0130 utc) time we gibed over to head south to Hiva Oa, 09* 44.47′ N, 125* 11.96 W

Lots of wind earlier today 15 to 30 with gusts to 42. 1445 miles out from PV, 1317 as the crow flies to Hiva Oa.

Saw a lunar eclipse last night. Judy took a shower today in high winds in the cockpit. Full moon just came up. Forward head started leaking water on the floor, but just a loose fitting so tightened it up some, seems good. Still no fish. Judy thought she saw a tuna or something in the water.

Can’t get messages during the day lately. Too far and signals aren’t right. One message said 56 minutes to down load so I stopped it. Tonight it was 3 minutes to down load. Working on getting grib files for wind and weather coming up.

Judy’s Leg is Doing Fine, Steve’s Left Elbow Not So Fine April 13, 2014

Judy’s leg is good.

Today we jibed over and somewhere in the process I hit my left elbow bad enough to open a new cut but only one butterfly bandage needed. But the elbow has swelled up a bunch and filled with fluid. Today was shower day for me too, so maybe the bandages are wet. But I setup the water to get hot and it was a nice day out, but still rough. Winds 10 to 20 very variable and a lot of swell.
